Kathy’s tip the balance story

Tipping the balance logo showing a smiley emoji and a sad emoji on scales with the NDIS logo underneath

Overall I have to be very grateful that we have the NDIS in Australia. My 39 yr old son has high support needs and was funded well (and promptly), before NDIS. In some ways things are not as good now…6 month wait for approval of a new hoist and tie-down wheelchair straps in van (both existing ones were barely usable). Service providers eg wheelchair technician and hoist retailer had problems with payment delays from NDIA. There is a one-off funding for a holiday each year (fantastic) but can only be used for carer support, not accommodation or travel, and only in Australia…so his dream of 4 nights in Bali is not possible (a change with that funding would be really appreciated). In other ways I’m happy with the scheme as speech therapy is now added. If we have motivated people managing this scheme at the top level, we can get there, hopefully!
