Taigum’s Scott Harry explains his hopes for the NDIS

THE National Disability Insurance Scheme is a step closer for northsiders with a disability, bringing with it the chance for people to finally be the masters of their own destiny.

The NDIS officially came to Queensland on July 1 and will gradually roll out across the state, council area by council area, to reach Brisbane on July 1, 2018.

Under the scheme, people with a disability will have much greater say about everything, from where they live, who works as their carers, to what kind of support is available to facilitate employment, education and community participation.

Taigum’s Scott Harry, 40, and brother Daniel, who both have incurable Duchenne muscular dystrophy, were part of a Queensland Department of Communities pilot program which over the past few years has allowed them to enjoy a preview of what life may be like under the NDIS.
