Call made for disability workers to undergo vulnerable people checks

Disability workers should undergo working with vulnerable people checks before they can be employed in the sector, a parliamentary inquiry has recommended.

The Victorian inquiry into abuse in disability services also called for an independent “oversight” body responsible for handling complaints and investigating serious incidents.

The report, tabled in Parliament on Thursday, comes after a damning Ombudsman investigation found Victorians with disabilities were not reporting abuse because they feared they would not be believed and no action would be taken.

The inquiry examined Victoria’s position on quality and safeguards for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
