Tasmania becomes third state to sign up to National Disability Insurance Scheme

Tasmania has become the third state to sign up.

From next July, people aged between 12 and 28 will be eligible, the following July it will extend to people between age four and 34 with the full roll-out completed in 2018.

Human Services Minister Jacqui Petrusma told 936 ABC Hobart the rollout needed to be staggered.

“We have to remember that the disability sector has to gear up at each stage along this transition,” she said.

“We need about 2,500 employees to go into the disability services.

“So it couldn’t all be done straight away so using a staged, age-based approach the disability sector can now deliver services that are specific for a particular age group.”
