TIME TO LOCK IN THE NDIS

The hopes and dreams of hundreds of thousands of Australians rest with our political leaders as they meet in Canberra on 25 July for the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting to decide how the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will be funded and progressed.

We ask everyone who needs the NDIS to  SEND A MESSAGE TO COAG.

Every message will go into our COAG Message Book, to be presented to the Prime Minister, the Premiers of each state and the Chief Ministers of each territory.

We will make it plain to each political leader that Australians expect them to fully support and deliver a person-centred, nation-wide system of disability support – the NDIS.

In every state and territory people are deprived of the disability supports they need to  be part of everyday life. All our political leaders must understand that disability can – and does – happen to anyone, any time.

Just like Kieron. An accident on the Gold Coast one sunny day left Kieron, 25. paralysed.  It took away his freedom of movement and his independence.  Unable to pay for the right supports and equipment, Kieron now can’t leave the house.  This is Kieron’s reality every day.  And the reality of his mum, Elaine, who is now his 24/7 carer.

Kieron and Elaine support the NDIS,  as do over one million other Australians – 410,000 people with severe disability and over 700,000 family carers – to ensure they can regain their independence, be part of everyday life again and have the opportunity to contribute to our nation.

As federal shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey said in a speech in London in May:

“Equality of opportunity … is my preferred model for contemporary society.”

The message that the Every Australian Counts campaign sends to COAG is we expect our political leaders to take responsibility to fund and  deliver the NDIS in every state and territory, so that every Australian has equality of opportunity.

  • I have had extensive experience working in the disability sector and fully concur with the Productivity Commission’s findings that the system is underfunded, unfair, fragmented leaving many families and individuals in desperate circumstances. Most people with a disability are non-compensible and the discrepancy between the provisions to compensible groups is stark. The cost of living for people with a disability reliant on state government support is significantly higher than for the rest of the community as their quality of life depends on access, mobility and communication aids, accessible transport, attendant care and respite. Its time to act. Bring on the NDIS!

  • It’s time for all sides of Federal and State Government to just suck it up and get on with it. As a polio sufferer from infancy and suffering the aches and pains of post polio syndrome i say “this should have been done decades ago and people like me and so many others would not have suffered as much” So Like I said “suck it up and get it done NOW all you public servants” That’s right I said “public servants” so do the right thing!

  • I am a young mum (with two toddlers) who also has fibromyalgia. Even though this means that I am unable to do any heavy housework, am often unable to cook meals for my family and take hours to do a single load of dishes – we have been unable to source any assistance from any of the current disability agencies. We do not qualify for help with our housework/meals because my husband is able bodied – only problem is that he is working very hard to retain a roof over our heads, pay for food, my medications and child are as I am unable to look after our kids by myself. Once he has finished work for the day he then has to make dinner if I have been unable to do so, get the kids fed, bathed and into bed, then make lunches. He is overloaded and going to get sick himself if we do not get help soon – we do not have family that can step in and help. I cannot believe that our family has completely fallen through the gaps!
