Honour for NDIS advocate Trisha Malowney

Champion for the rights of people with disabilities and NDIS supporter Trisha Malowney has joined the Victorian Honour Roll of Women for her work advocating for women with disability.

Congratulations Trisha!

Since contracting polio at the age of four months Trisha has been a strong advocate for women with disability, and has been very involved in the Every Australian Counts campaign, giving a stirring speech at the Melbourne Make it Real rally in 2012.

She says the NDIS needs to change the way people with disability in Australia are treated – and we couldn’t agree more.

Read more about Trisha’s work here.

A letter to Premier Napthine: Nick’s story

A letter to Premier Napthine: Nick's story

More than 1,200 Victorians have sent a message to new Premier Denis Napthine calling on him to implement the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Many supporters have shared their personal stories with the Premiers, urging him to lock in the NDIS. Here is one from Nick:

Dear Premier Napthine,

Congratulations on your recent appointment as Premier of Victoria.

You now have the ability to make a decision to do something that is really important to me, the full implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

I have been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and Bi-Polar which finally stopped me working around 3 years ago. This began my contact with the current disability system. I wish to give my impressions of the new NDIS which we are all waiting for with bated breath.

One of the many frustrations which my wife and I have learnt are now part of our lives are offers of financial support to help with safety and mobility equipment, primely though the SWEP “State Wide Equipment Program”. But with the co-payments required often out of the reach for those on limited incomes this funding is so often not used, with no reason to believe it will ever be used. With the labyrinth of programs both State and Federal that are available, you need to be a career public servant to locate and take advantage of all that is on offer.

However my wife and I are looking forward to the future. A future where we will live with a fully-fledged NDIS. Have a single set of forms. Common assessment tools set up for my type of condition with a single point of contact. The chance to use the funding on offer in ways that will best suit me and my family. We live in the Dandenong Mountains, our priorities are obviously different to those of someone living in the inner city.

I’m particularly looking forward to a future were my health doesn’t dictate my family’s future. Where it isn’t assumed my wife will give up full time work to care for me. A future where my daughters don’t give up their free time to shuttle me around and fill the gaps my wife’s crowded schedule leaves uncovered.

I don’t see the biggest impact of the NDIS being on my life at all. It’s the other lives that have been dragged into this system with me. I see the NDIS will have an impact far wider than just equipment and aid with daily living. I see it giving back, at least part of my old life. A chance to be part of the work force a bread winner, someone who is productive, as I was for 20 years.

Best wishes, and thank you for your support.

Send your own message to Premier Napthine.
